FIR against Cong leader Supriya Shrinate, social media influencer Neha Singh Rathore in Chhattisgarh over fake video post

Raipur: Police registered an FIR against Congress national spokesperson Supriya Shrinate and social media influencer Neha Singh Rathore on Monday for allegedly sharing a misleading video on social media and attempting to disrupt public harmony.

The action followed a complaint filed at Civil Lines police station by BJP Chhattisgarh state spokesperson Ujjwal Deepak. The complainant alleged that Rathore shared a post on X claiming that BJP leaders in Kurud, Dhamtari district, hoisted the party flag instead of the national flag on Independence Day.

Shrinate reshared the post with captions alleging disrespect to the Tricolour, while Congress leader Dr. Ragini Nayak labelled the leaders as traitors in her response.

Police said the video used in the posts was not from Independence Day. The clip pertained to the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Prashikshan Mahaabhiyan event held on March 22, 2026. Deepak stated that the old media files were circulated out of context to tarnish the reputation of the party and its elected representatives.

Following a preliminary inquiry, police registered a case under Sections 196, 336(4), and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These provisions address promoting enmity between different groups, issuing statements conducive to public mischief, and committing acts detrimental to public peace.

The complaint highlighted that broadcasting false content on a national occasion like Independence Day could trigger social and political tension, misinform the public, and disturb law and order.

Deepak requested law enforcement agencies to preserve the digital evidence, including the original posts, media files, and comments, and seek metadata from social media platforms to trace the source. Police stated that investigation into the matter is underway and further legal steps will follow based on the findings.
