The path has been cleared for operating a Light Metro in Chhattisgarh. This metro, utilizing Russian technology, will run between Raipur and Durg-Bhilai. An MoU was signed between the Raipur Municipal Corporation and Russia during the International Transport Summit held in Moscow. Mayor Aijaz Dhebar and Russia’s Transport Minister signed the MoU.
Mayor Aijaz Dhebar mentioned that Russian experts would soon arrive in Raipur. The work will be carried out as a joint venture. He added that the team would first visit Raipur, inspect the city, and provide suggestions for the operation of electric city buses.
Mayor Dhebar also informed that the Russian team would inspect Raipur’s skywalk. They will consider whether the Light Metro can be operated on it. The MoU, signed by Moscow’s Transport Minister and Mayor, focuses on four key areas. This is a significant achievement for Raipur city.
The Mayor emphasized that this is a major achievement for Raipur city, and the government should rise above party politics to focus on it. This MoU is expected to solve the city’s traffic problems significantly, and a better transportation system will be established in Raipur.

Dhebar mentioned that efforts to improve Raipur’s traffic system and bring a Light Metro to the city have been ongoing since 2022 in collaboration with Russia. He visited Russia again during the 2023 Transportation Summit and communicated with Moscow’s Transport Minister and Mayor regularly. After three years, success has been achieved.
Dhebar stated that Russia has the world’s most advanced public transport system. Using this technology can significantly improve Raipur’s traffic system and public transport services. A recent report recognized Moscow’s vast public transport system as the most efficient in the world.
The estimated budget for the Light Metro project in Raipur, modeled after a metro train, is around ₹400-500 crores. However, the budget approval process will begin after understanding the technical aspects. The corporation is also considering its revenue and potential foreign investments.
