Minor Held for Murder After Assault Victim Dies in Hospital

Raipur: Chakradharnagar police have taken a minor into custody and invoked murder charges after a 43-year-old man succumbed to injuries sustained in a physical assault on October 25, 2026. Police recovered the bamboo stick used in the attack and presented the juvenile before the Juvenile Justice Board in Raigarh, which sent him to an observation home.
Trilochan Mahar, a 70-year-old resident of Bhikharimal village, filed a police report on October 30, 2026. His son, Kanhaiya Mahar, had returned home by train from Sambalpur, Odisha, along with his wife and children on the night of the incident. Kanhaiya stepped outside to pay an auto-rickshaw driver but did not return for a long time. At around 1:30 am, three local youths brought an unconscious Kanhaiya back to his house. Family members took him to the district hospital in Raigarh the following morning.
Inquiries revealed that Kanhaiya had an altercation with a local minor late at night. During the argument, the minor allegedly struck Kanhaiya on the head with a bamboo stick and also assaulted individuals who attempted to intervene. Chakradharnagar police initially registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on the initial complaint.
Hospital authorities transferred critically injured Kanhaiya from Raigarh to DKS Hospital in Raipur for advanced medical care, where he died during treatment on the night of November 3, 2026. Following the transfer of the morgue diary from Golbazar police station in Raipur, Chakradharnagar police upgraded the case to Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder.
Chakradharnagar police station house officer Inspector Rakesh Mishra and trainee sub-inspector Harsh Chandrakar led the investigation and subsequent apprehension of the juvenile.
