Union govt adds 33 PG medical seats in Chhattisgarh, total rises to 298

RAIPUR: The Union government has sanctioned 33 additional postgraduate (PG) medical seats across three state-run medical colleges in Chhattisgarh for the 2026-27 academic session, raising the total intake capacity from 265 to 298.

State Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal said Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has instructed the authorities concerned to expand medical healthcare infrastructure across the state. The increase in PG seats will allow more doctors to pursue specialization and serve in state hospitals.

According to the revised seat matrix issued on 6 November, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Medical College in Raipur received 19 additional seats, taking its total count from 146 to 165. Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) in Bilaspur gained eight seats, raising its capacity from 91 to 99. Late Shri Baliram Kashyap Memorial Government Medical College in Jagdalpur secured six new seats, expanding its total from 28 to 34.

Postgraduate medical students handle patient care under senior doctors during their training. The addition of seats will provide extra manpower to associated teaching hospitals and help address the shortage of specialist doctors in the state.
