Tragic Accident at Ramakrishna Hospital: Three Sweepers Die Cleaning Septic Tank, Families Clash with Police

Raipur: In a heartbreaking incident late Tuesday night, three sweepers suffocated to death while cleaning a septic tank at Ramakrishna Hospital near Pachpedi Naka in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. Enraged family members stormed the hospital gates, leading to a scuffle with police amid chaotic protests.
The victims—Govind Sendre, Anmol Machkan, and Prashant Kumar, all residents of Simran City—had been sent into the hospital’s sewerage tank for routine cleaning. Toxic gases inside the tank caused them to collapse one by one, and they were declared dead on the spot, according to eyewitnesses and hospital sources.
Family members, overcome with grief, accused the hospital management of gross negligence. “They sent untrained laborers into a deadly tank without any safety gear to cut costs,” one relative wailed, as crowds gathered and tensions escalated. Protesters breached the premises, demanding immediate action against those responsible.
Safety Protocols Ignored, Families Demand Justice
Septic tank cleaning is inherently hazardous, typically handled by municipal corporations or trained teams equipped with gas detectors, oxygen masks, and protective kits. Experts emphasize that bypassing these standards—such as using common laborers instead of certified personnel—directly led to this preventable tragedy.
Police have launched an investigation, with officials promising strict action. The hospital remains tense, with grieving families refusing to leave until accountability is ensured.
