47 booked for drunk driving in overnight Raipur crackdown; 3,559 prosecuted this year

RAIPUR: The Raipur Traffic Police booked 47 motorists for drunk driving during a special late-night enforcement drive conducted across the city on Saturday, taking the total number of drunk-driving cases registered this year to 3,559.

The crackdown was carried out under the Raipur Police Commissionerate as part of an ongoing campaign to improve road safety, reduce accidents and enforce traffic discipline. The drive was conducted under the directions of the Police Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Protocol).

According to the traffic police, the special checking operation was held at nine key locations across the city, including Telibandha Chowk, Pachpedi Naka Chowk, Bhanthagaon Chowk, Tatibandh Chowk, Kalibadi Chowk, Jai Stambh Chowk, Bhanpuri Chowk and outside Pandri police station. The operation was led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Seema Ahirwar, with teams of traffic officers and personnel deployed at the checkpoints.

During the operation, police detected 47 motorists driving under the influence of alcohol. Those booked included 29 car drivers, four motorcycle riders, one e-rickshaw driver, seven Tata Ace drivers and six truck drivers. Traffic police said challans have been issued against the offenders under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and they will be produced before the competent court for further legal proceedings.

Officials said the campaign is not target-driven but is intended solely to minimise road accidents, safeguard lives and promote responsible driving behaviour. They reiterated that drunken driving is not only a punishable offence but also poses a serious risk to the lives of both the driver and other road users.

The traffic police appealed to citizens to strictly follow road safety rules by avoiding drunken driving, wearing helmets and seat belts, refraining from using mobile phones while driving, adhering to speed limits, obeying traffic signals and police instructions, and ensuring that minors are not allowed to operate vehicles.

The department said such enforcement drives will continue regularly to strengthen road safety and foster a disciplined and responsible traffic culture in the city.
