Power of ballots prevails over bullets in Chhattisgarh; 75.16% polling recorded in Kanker, Mahasamund, Rajnandgaon PCs

In the second phase of Lok Sabha elections in Chhattisgarh, the power of the ballot prevailed over intimidation tactics and threats, as voters turned out in unprecedented numbers, especially in the Bindranawagarh assembly constituency of Kanker, where 81.19% casting their votes despite election boycott announcements in certain villages and Naxal threats. The constituencies of Kanker, Rajnandgaon, and Mahasamund went to the polls on Friday, witnessing remarkable voter enthusiasm. Overall, 75.16% polling was recorded in three Parliamentary Constituencies (PCs) went to poll on Friday.
The resolute determination of the electorate was evident as the highest voting percentage of 81.19% was recorded in Bindranawagarh, underscoring the triumph of democracy over adversity. Despite challenges posed by election boycotts and Naxal activities, the district administration’s strategic planning and effective coordination ensured the smooth conduct of elections, earning accolades for Bindranawagarh as the highest voting assembly constituency in the state.
In Gariaband district’s Bindranawagarh assembly constituency, where ensuring successful voting posed a significant challenge, the administration’s adept strategy and coordination proved instrumental in achieving this milestone. With 81.19% voter turnout in the district, including 75.59% in Rajim, and 81.19% in Bindranawagarh, the democratic spirit of the region shone brightly.
The resolve of the administration to address concerns and engage with the electorate was evident in the deliberations held with representatives and villagers of Koeyba, Sahebin Kachhar, Indagaon, and Gariba Panchayats, who had announced election boycotts. The intervention of senior Superintendent of Police Amit Tukaram Kambale further bolstered confidence, as he assured villagers of support and addressed their grievances, setting a precedent for collaborative problem-solving.
Despite challenges, polling stations in highly sensitive areas witnessed significant turnout, with Oda recording 79%, Amarora 63%, Gariba 17%, Kamarbhodi 83%, Big Gobra 75.7%, Gaur Gaon 33.45%, Sahebin Kachhar 12.5%, Kodoamali 48%, and Nagesh 53% voter participation. Notably, in the boycotting village Koeyba, 63% voting demonstrated the electorate’s resilience against intimidation.
In a landmark move, voters from 46 villages in Bastar and Kanker Parliamentary Constituencies cast their votes in polling booths set up within their communities for the first time in a Lok Sabha Election. This initiative, coupled with special efforts to facilitate voting among vulnerable groups, underscores the Election Commission’s commitment to inclusive and accessible electoral processes.
The successful conclusion of phase 2, marked by peaceful polling across 13 states/UTs with a 60.96% voter turnout, reflects the resilience and determination of the Indian electorate to exercise their democratic rights. As polling concludes in 14 States/UTs for General Elections 2024, the nation awaits the democratic verdict with anticipation and optimism.
