The Chhattisgarh government has handed over the investigation into the alleged NAN (Nagrik Apurti Nigam) Scam to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The case was previously being handled by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW).
Former Advocate General Satish Chandra Verma, who served during the Congress government, is under scrutiny in the case. He, along with retired IAS officers Anil Tuteja and Alok Shukla, is accused of pressuring witnesses and influencing their statements.
On November 4, 2024, the EOW filed a new FIR against Tuteja, Shukla, and Verma based on evidence that includes WhatsApp chats. The FIR alleges misuse of influence and involvement in a criminal conspiracy to manipulate official documents and departmental records within the EOW to prepare favorable responses for a High Court case related to the scam.
The FIR states that the accused conspired to alter procedural documents to strengthen their defense in a High Court case regarding anticipatory bail. It further alleges that Verma, as the Advocate General, was influenced to misuse his powers to benefit Tuteja and Shukla.
The NAN Scam involves alleged corruption in Chhattisgarh’s Civil Supplies Corporation. The accused reportedly leveraged their positions to interfere in government operations, including influencing postings and transfers of key officials. The scam came to light after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) submitted reports and WhatsApp chat evidence to the EOW in April 2024, which prompted the FIR.
