CCTV, Technical Surveillance Lead Cops to Ujjain-Bound Train; Two Held Within 24 Hours of Academy Burglary
RAIPUR: A burglary at an educational academy turned into a 24-hour police chase after CCTV footage and technical surveillance helped investigators track two suspects onto a train bound for Ujjain, leading to their arrest at Betul railway station in Madhya Pradesh and recovery of the entire ₹4.97 lakh stolen cash.
The accused, Chitransh Sen (18), a resident of Khamtarai, and Firoz Sahu (19) of Birgaon, allegedly broke into VR Education Academy in Birgaon during the intervening night of August 31 and fled with ₹4,97,500 kept in an almirah locker.
Academy director Pragati Verma lodged a complaint after discovering the break-in. The burglary had taken place between 12.06am and 12.48am, police said.
Following instructions from Police Commissioner Dr Sanjeev Shukla and Additional Police Commissioner Amit Tukaram Kamble, a dedicated team was formed to identify and track the suspects. Under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Zone) Deepmala Kashyap and Additional DCP Aditya Pandey, the team led by Urla Station House Officer Rohit Malekar examined CCTV footage and questioned academy staff.
The investigation soon moved beyond Raipur after technical surveillance indicated that the suspects had boarded a train bound for Ujjain. Urla police then coordinated with Railway Protection Force (RPF) teams in Bhilai and Betul to track the train and intercept the duo.
The suspects were apprehended at Betul railway station and brought back to Raipur. During interrogation, police said both confessed to the burglary. Investigators subsequently recovered the entire stolen amount of ₹4,97,500 from their possession.
A case was registered against the accused under Sections 331(4), 305 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police records show that Chitransh Sen had previously been booked in two separate cases at Khamtarai police station in 2022, involving assault and motorcycle theft.
