Political activity intensifies for two Rajya Sabha seats in Chhattisgarh

Raipur
After the announcement of biennial elections by the Election Commission of India, political activity has intensified in Chhattisgarh over two Rajya Sabha seats. The notification will be issued on 26 February, marking the start of the nomination process, while 5 March will be the last date for filing nominations.

The seats are currently held by Phulo Devi Netam and K.T.S. Tulsi, whose terms end on 2 April.
Based on the strength of the 90-member Assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress are each expected to win one seat through first-preference votes.

BJP strategy: focus on local representation

Party sources suggest the BJP may again prioritise state-based leaders for the Upper House. A leader with a strong grassroots connection, particularly linked to farmers’ issues, could be preferred.

There is also discussion about giving representation to the Surguja and Bastar divisions to maintain regional and social balance. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and senior organisational leaders are expected to meet soon to finalise a panel of names for the central leadership.
Observers believe the party could once again announce a surprise candidate.

Congress weighs senior state leaders

Within the Congress, there is strong demand to field a local face this time. Names under consideration include:

  • Deepak Baij – PCC President
  • Mohan Markam – Former PCC President
  • Bhupesh Baghel – Former Chief Minister
  • T. S. Singh Deo – Former Deputy Chief Minister

The deliberations are based on administrative experience, tribal representation, and regional equations.

Assembly strength

  • Total seats – 90
  • BJP – 54
  • Congress – 35
  • GGP – 1

Election schedule

  • 26 February – Issue of notification
  • 5 March – Last date for nominations
  • 6 March – Scrutiny of nominations
  • 9 March – Withdrawal of candidature
  • 16 March 2026 – Polling (9 am – 4 pm)
  • 16 March (5 pm onwards) – Counting
  • 20 March – Completion of election process

➡️ Though the outcome may be predictable numerically, candidate selection and political messaging will be crucial for both parties ahead of future electoral battles.
