Coal Minister Reddy Hails Gevra as Nation’s Pride: Lauds Miners as Energy Warriors, Emphasizes Sustainable Mining

Raipur, April 10, 2025: Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, visited South Eastern Coalfields Limited’s (SECL) Gevra mine—recognized as the world’s second-largest coal mine—on Thursday. During his visit, he lauded coal miners as the “real energy warriors” of the nation for their relentless efforts in powering India.
Reddy was welcomed with a Guard of Honour by the CISF at Gevra House. He received a detailed briefing on the mine’s operations and praised both male and female workers for their role in strengthening India’s energy security.
The Minister inspected large-scale mining operations, including the use of advanced machinery like 42-cubic-meter shovels and 240-ton dumpers. He also observed coal extraction through blast-free surface miner technology and visited the eco-friendly Silos built under the First Mile Connectivity initiative.

In a gesture to boost morale, Reddy interacted with machine operators, shared a meal with workers at their canteen, and took selfies with them.
He also visited the Miyawaki plantation site at Gevra, where afforestation is being undertaken using the Japanese technique, and planted saplings. Additionally, he inaugurated the newly built Kalyan Mandap, a facility for employee gatherings.
Highlighting the coal sector’s critical role, Reddy said, “Over 70% of India’s electricity comes from coal. One may wait for food, but electricity cannot wait—and it is the coal miners who ensure uninterrupted power.” He called Gevra “the pride of our country” and emphasized the need for sustainable mining and well-planned mine closure practices.
Coal India Chairman P.M. Prasad, Ministry of Coal Joint Secretary B.P. Pati, and SECL CMD Harish Duhan were also present during the visit, along with other senior officials.
