The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested liquor baron Anwar Dhebar, brother of Raipur Mayor and congress leader Aijaz Dhebar, in connection with a liquor scam in Chhattisgarh, one and a half month after the residence and the office of Dhebar was raided by the ED in the month of March.
On Friday night, the ED raided a hotel in Raipur. Dhebar was called for questioning following which his arrest was made on the basis of some strong evidence found against him.
Dhebar was presented in the court of Ajay Singh in Raipur on Saturday afternoon by the ED which demanded his remand. Hearing was going on till filing this report. ED sources said that some businessmen of the city, in connivance with the officials of the Excise Department, made illegal earnings from liquor and did money laundering.
Mayor Aijaz Dhebar was also called by the ED to the office for questioning. On Tuesday itself, the ED had kept him sitting in his office for about 12 hours. After this, he has been called to the Enforcement Directorate office on Saturday.
In protest against the ED action, some supporters, including women, started reaching the ED office and staged demonstration.
