Ragging at Raipur Medical College
50 Students’ Heads Allegedly Shaved, Juniors Ordered to Apply Oil and Follow Dress Code
Raipur
Reports have emerged of severe ragging incidents at Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, where junior students were allegedly beaten by seniors, with around 50 students forced to shave their heads. Seniors also instructed them to apply a specific oil and arrive in uniform with school shoes and bags.
According to sources, second-year MBBS students allegedly ragged first-year students in October 2024, and the juniors complained of harassment within the hostel. Seniors also reportedly demanded photos of junior female students.
Following a complaint on October 26, the Anti-Ragging Cell suspended two second-year students from the 2023 MBBS batch, Anshu Joshi and Deeparaj Verma, for ten days. They are barred from attending classes and clinic postings, with this disciplinary action formalized on November 4.
Dr. Rakesh Gupta, President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Raipur, stated that the college administration initially ignored complaints from juniors. However, parents and concerned individuals escalated the issue to the National Medical Commission (NMC) in Delhi, tagging them on social media platforms, which prompted the college to take action.
In a WhatsApp group, a message allegedly stated, “Real ragging will begin after the 10th,” hinting at further threats. Dr. Gupta noted that five of the ten suspension days include holidays, minimizing its impact. He emphasized the need for higher-level intervention to ensure the students’ safety, urging accountability from college authorities given the seriousness of the case.
Meanwhile, Medical College Dean Dr Vivek Choudhary said that five students have been suspended for a period of one month for their alleged involvement in the ragging.
