Woman arrested in Durg for defrauding self-help group members of ₹15 lakh

Raipur: Police in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district have arrested a 33-year-old woman for allegedly defrauding local women of nearly ₹15 lakh under the pretext of investments in self-help groups.
The accused, identified as Vidya Sahu, a resident of Kurud village in the Jamul police station area, was taken into custody on 20 August 2026 and sent to judicial remand on 21 August 2026.
According to the police, the action followed a complaint lodged by Triveni Sahu, also a resident of Kurud. The complainant alleged that the accused enticed several women with promises of high returns by investing in self-help groups. She persuaded the victims to apply for Mudra loans and personal loans, collected the disbursed amounts for her personal use, and retained their financial documents.
Following the complaint, Jamul police registered a case under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A police team set up a cordon to apprehend the accused.
During interrogation, Vidya Sahu confessed to obtaining the loan amounts from the women and spending the money herself. Police seized several documents and financial instruments from her possession, including loan cards, bank passbooks, ATM cards, labour cards, and identity documents.
Investigation into the matter is ongoing. Durg police have urged citizens to verify the legitimacy of any self-help group or investment scheme before participating, and cautioned against handing over bank passbooks, ATM cards, or personal identification documents to third parties.
