Govt cracks down on illegal mining in Surajpur, eight vehicles seized

Raipur

The Chhattisgarh Mineral Resources Department has seized eight vehicles and registered multiple cases against transhipers involved in the illegal transport of coal and sand in Surajpur district. The action is part of the state government’s ongoing drive against illegal mining, transportation, and storage of minerals.

Following directives from Surajpur Collector Rena Jamil, the mineral resources department, a district-level task force, and mining officials have stepped up surveillance in mining-affected areas.

A special inspection drive was conducted on the Pachira–Mani Chowk route under Surajpur tehsil on 7 June. During checking near Beltikri village, officials intercepted six motorcycles illegally transporting coal. Authorities seized approximately 5 tonnes of coal along with the two-wheelers and kept them at the Surajpur police station for security.

The department initiated legal proceedings against owners of three tipper trucks engaged in illegal transport of sand in Rajapur, Harratikra, and adjacent areas.

Further, during a surprise inspection of the Rajapur sand mine area on 8 June, officials impounded two more tipper trucks found transporting sand illegally. Cases were registered under mining rules, and the seized vehicles and mineral cargo were handed over to the Jayanagar police station.

Department officials stated that the drive against illegal extraction, transport, and storage of minerals will continue across the district. The mining team is conducting regular inspections to protect natural resources and prevent loss of state revenue. The administration warned of strict legal action against individuals found involved in unlawful mining activities.
