Chhattisgarh Sizzles at 45°C as Heatwave Scorches People, Wildlife

Raipur — A severe heatwave continues to grip Chhattisgarh, pushing daytime temperatures into the mid-40s and placing pressure on people, wildlife and public services. The Meteorological Department has warned of continued hot conditions across central districts for the next five days.

Heat and humidity persist despite brief rains

Although light rain was recorded in parts of the state, it has only increased humidity without providing real relief. Bilaspur recorded the highest temperature at 45°C, while Ambikapur reported a minimum of 24°C. The weather office expects dry conditions with hot winds to continue for the next two days.

Bilaspur issues health advisory

After temperatures hit 45°C, the district health department issued a public advisory urging residents to avoid direct sun exposure during midday hours and maintain proper hydration.

Special caution has been advised for children, elderly people, and pregnant women. Two emergency helpline numbers have also been released for heat-related assistance: 87706-64365 and 75870-38622.

Raigarh faces severe heat stress

In Raigarh, temperatures reached 44.8°C, with residents reporting that even fans and coolers are proving ineffective due to oppressive daytime heat and warm nights. Light evening showers failed to reduce temperature or humidity, worsening discomfort.

Wildlife under pressure: elephant shows thermal stress

Extreme heat is also affecting wildlife. Near the Odisha border in the Barkachar beat of Bangursia East Circle, an elephant was seen repeatedly using a farm water tank to spray itself with water — a clear sign of heat stress in animals.

Raipur forecast

Raipur is expected to remain mostly clear today, with a maximum temperature near 44°C and minimum around 30°C.

Meteorological warning

The Meteorological Department has warned of possible heatwave conditions across central Chhattisgarh for the next five days, with minimal temperature variation expected. Citizens are advised to strictly follow heat safety guidelines.

Health impact of extreme heat

Experts note that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can affect both physical and mental health, leading to fatigue, irritability, sleep disturbance, and reduced concentration. Research from the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health suggests heatwaves can increase mental health consultations by up to 8% during peak summer.

Safety precautions

  • Maintain hydration with water and electrolytes
  • Avoid outdoor activity between 11:00–16:00 hours
  • Protect children, elderly, and pregnant women
  • Use light clothing, hats, and shaded travel
  • Seek immediate help for signs of heat exhaustion or dizziness
