IGKV Convocation: Governor Ramen Deka pitches value-added farming for growth

Raipur: Chhattisgarh Governor Ramen Deka on Friday stressed the need for value addition in agriculture to accelerate economic growth, saying the sector must focus on higher productivity and better returns amid shrinking cultivable land.

Addressing the 11th convocation ceremony of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya in Raipur as Chancellor, the Governor said nearly 80% of Chhattisgarh’s economy is dependent on agriculture, making it imperative to adopt modern and technology-driven farming practices.

He said agriculture is no longer limited to traditional methods and is increasingly being shaped by science, technology and entrepreneurship. Referring to the growing use of artificial intelligence, drones, precision farming and data analytics, Deka said these innovations are transforming the agricultural sector.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who attended the programme as chief guest, said IGKV has played a significant role in agricultural research and development in the state. He said the government is committed to making farming profitable and sustainable by prioritising farmers’ welfare.

The Chief Minister highlighted measures such as paddy procurement at Rs 3,100 per quintal and free electricity supply to farmers as key initiatives aimed at strengthening the rural economy.

Speaking on the changing rural landscape, Governor Deka said India is rapidly moving towards a digital rural economy through innovations such as drone-based spraying and mobile-based advisories for farmers. He urged young graduates to embrace modern agricultural practices and focus on high-value crops. Referring to Chhattisgarh as the “rice bowl” of the country, he said emphasis should also be placed on premium varieties such as Basmati to improve farmers’ income.

Agriculture Minister Ram Vichar Netam said Chhattisgarh possesses the highest number of paddy varieties and also holds immense potential in horticulture, floriculture and spice cultivation. He encouraged students to contribute to the sector through research and innovation.

During the ceremony, degrees were awarded to 1,880 students for the academic session 2024–25, including 128 PhD scholars, 518 postgraduate students and 1,234 undergraduate students. Merit holders received 13 gold medals, seven silver medals and two bronze medals.

Noted agricultural scientist Ashok Kumar Singh delivered the convocation address, while Vice-Chancellor Girish Chandel presented the university report and administered the pledge to graduating students.

The event was also attended by local MLA Anuj Sharma, university officials and parents of students.
