Supreme Court denies relief to Amit Jogi in Jaggi murder case; joint hearing on April 23

Raipur | Supreme Court has refused to grant relief to Amit Jogi, son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, in the Ramavatar Jaggi murder case. The court has scheduled a joint hearing on April 23, 2026, for two connected appeals.

🔹 What is the case?

Amit Jogi has challenged two separate orders:

  • An order allowing the CBI to file an appeal
  • The Chhattisgarh High Court verdict, which convicted him of murder (IPC Section 302) and criminal conspiracy (Section 120-B) and sentenced him to life imprisonment

🔹 High Court ruling

On April 2, 2026, the High Court convicted Amit Jogi and directed him to surrender within three weeks. He has since approached the Supreme Court against the decision.

🔹 Amit Jogi’s statement

Amit Jogi expressed faith in the judiciary on social media. He stated that the Supreme Court has tagged both matters for a combined hearing. His legal team includes senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Mukul Rohatgi, Vivek Tankha, Siddharth Dave, and Shashank Garg.

🔹 Case background

NCP leader Ramavatar Jaggi was shot dead on June 4, 2003. The investigation named 31 accused persons, out of which 28 were convicted.

  • In 2007, a Raipur special court acquitted Amit Jogi due to lack of evidence
  • The victim’s son Satish Jaggi challenged the acquittal in the Supreme Court
  • The Supreme Court later stayed the decision and transferred the case to the High Court

🔹 Arguments in High Court

The petitioner’s counsel argued that the case involved a politically influenced conspiracy and alleged that evidence was destroyed during investigation after the CBI probe began.

🔹 Other convictions

Several individuals, including former police officers, civic representatives, and other accused, have been convicted in the case and sentenced to life imprisonment.
