Tensions erupt in Kanker over burial of converted man

Raipur

Clashes broke out between two groups in Bade Tewda village near Amabera on Wednesday over the burial of a man who had reportedly converted his faith. Several villagers and police personnel sustained injuries during the scuffle.

The dispute began following the death of Chamraram Salam, father of village sarpanch Rajman Salam, during treatment at a hospital on Sunday. The sarpanch buried his father’s remains within the village premises. Local residents gathered at the spot to protest the burial, leading to a standoff.

District administration and police officials reached the village on Sunday evening to mediate between the groups. Although discussions continued late into the evening, no resolution was reached, and the villagers initially dispersed.

The situation escalated on Wednesday when a large group of villagers gathered again, demanding that the body be exhumed. Attempts were made to dig up the remains, resulting in a physical confrontation between the two factions. Police personnel moved in to prevent the exhumation, during which both protesters and security officials were injured.

Senior police officers have taken charge of the site to prevent further violence. A large contingent of security forces remains deployed in Bade Tewda to maintain order. Officials stated that the situation is currently under control but remains tense.

Similar disputes regarding the burial of converted individuals have been reported in Kanker district previously. Authorities are monitoring the village to ensure peace.
