Raipur couple held for abusing minor boy, burning him with cigarettes

RAIPUR: Police on Saturday arrested a man and his wife for allegedly beating her minor son and burning him with cigarettes in the Pandri area.

The Civil Line Police have booked the couple under Sections 115(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.

The case stems from a complaint lodged on 13 October 2026 by Sushila Jagat of Tarun Nagar, Pandri, who approached the police along with other local residents. She alleged that the boy’s stepfather, Raja, subjected the child and his brother to severe cruelty at around 8:30 am that day.

According to police, the stepfather beat the boy relentlessly and burned his body with cigarettes, leaving serious injuries on his face, eyes and other body parts. The boy’s mother, Annu, allegedly did not intervene and instead helped the stepfather by trying to cover up the crime.

On directions from senior officials, a team led by the Civil Line station house officer questioned the complainant and witnesses before detaining the accused, who reportedly confessed to the crime.

The arrested are Raja alias Suresh Deep, 35, son of the late Bhim Deep, and Annu Devi, 40, wife of Vishal Paswan. Both live in Tarun Nagar, Pandri.

The Raipur Commissionerate said it will not tolerate violence, cruelty or harassment against children and will take strict legal action against offenders.
