Raipur
A 32-year-old man was arrested for allegedly shooting dead his two sisters-in-law in Raipur’s Pandri-Mova area late Tuesday night, in a shocking incident triggered by a domestic dispute, police said.
The accused, identified as Jitendra Kumar Verma, allegedly opened fire on Geetanjali Verma (alias Jaya) and Durgeshwari Verma using a licensed pistol, leading to their deaths during treatment.
According to police, the incident took place around 10:30 PM on May 5 at the residence of the victims’ family in Sundaripara, Mova. The complainant, Savitri Verma, told police that her daughter Jyoti Verma (alias Khileshwari), who is married to the accused since 2020, had been staying with her for the past 20–25 days due to ongoing marital discord. The couple has a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
On the night of the incident, Jitendra Verma arrived at the house and insisted on meeting his wife and speaking to his child over a video call. When the family asked him to return the next morning, citing that Jyoti’s phone was switched off, he allegedly became enraged.
Police said the accused took out his pistol and a quantity of ammunition from his pocket, scattered the bullets on the ground, and threatened to kill Geetanjali. He then allegedly fired two shots, causing her to collapse with severe bleeding.
Hearing the commotion, Durgeshwari, who was on the terrace, rushed downstairs. The accused allegedly shot her as well near the entrance of the house. Both victims were rushed to hospital but succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
As the complainant raised an alarm, locals gathered at the scene, prompting the accused to flee.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered at Pandri Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 103 (murder) and Section 109, along with Section 25 of the Arms Act.
Senior police officials, including DCP (North Zone) Mayank Gurjar and Additional DCP Akash Markam, reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Acting swiftly, the police traced and arrested the accused.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime. Police also seized the licensed pistol and live cartridges used in the offence.
Further investigation is underway.
