Brother-in-Law Arrested for Stealing 25 Tolas of Gold Worth ₹37 Lakh from Relative’s House in Raipur

Raipur, November 2, 2026: Raipur police arrested a 31-year-old man on November 2 for stealing gold jewellery worth approximately ₹37 lakh from his brother-in-law’s locked house in Lakshmi Nagar, under the Tikarapara police station limits. The accused allegedly committed the burglary to clear mounting debts caused by his online gambling addiction.

The joint operation was conducted by the Anti-Crime and Cyber Unit (ACCU) and Tikarapara police under the supervision of Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime and Cyber) Smritik Rajnala and Police Deputy Commissioner (West Zone) Robinson Guria.

According to police, the complainant, Anil Sharma, a technical expert in the Agriculture Department posted in Kondagaon, reported that his house in Lakshmi Nagar had been burgled. On October 30, his mother informed him that the main door lock had been broken. Unknown intruders had entered the third-floor residence, forced open lockers and stolen gold, silver and diamond jewellery along with cash.

Police registered a case under Sections 331(4) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Tikarapara police station and launched an investigation.

During the investigation, officers inspected the crime scene, questioned family members and examined CCTV footage from nearby areas. The footage showed a suspect climbing the compound wall and entering the building through the stairs. Investigators identified him as Priyank alias Shubham Pandey, the brother of the complainant’s wife and a resident of Prince Colony, Tikarapara.

Police apprehended the suspect, who initially attempted to mislead investigators by changing his statements. However, during sustained interrogation, he confessed to the crime.

According to police, the accused had accumulated substantial debts due to online gambling. He had stayed at the complainant’s house for two days before the incident and knew that his sister was away in Kondagaon. He was also familiar with the location of valuables inside the house.

On the day of the burglary, he allegedly climbed the compound wall, reached the third floor and used a portable grinder to break the door lock. He then forced open the almirah locker and stole the jewellery. He reportedly left some items behind to divert suspicion before fleeing the scene.

Police recovered 25 tolas of stolen gold jewellery worth approximately ₹37 lakh from the accused’s possession.

The arrested accused has been identified as Priyank alias Shubham Pandey, son of Devendra Pandey, aged 31. He is originally from Punjabi Para, Mahasamund, and currently resides in Prince Colony, Lakshmi Nagar, Tikarapara, Raipur.
