Raipur: Parallel check meters installed across 4,800 premises in Chhattisgarh have verified that smart meter readings are accurate, showing matching figures in every case, according to power distribution company officials.
The technical evaluations revealed no evidence of technical faults or inflated readings without corresponding power consumption. The smart meters, installed under the Central government’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), meet standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Officials stated that software tampering or accelerated meter speeds are technically impossible, as energy calculations strictly follow technical norms. Teams from the power distribution company inspect premises when consumers report discrepancies. At the consumer’s request, an older-series electronic meter is installed alongside the smart device to compare consumption free of cost.
Smart meter installations began in February 2024, and current readings continue to reflect actual usage. Consumers can also request meter testing in their presence at the NABL Testing Lab in Bhilai. The lab has tested 74 smart meters in front of consumers, with every device recording correct consumption.
Company officials clarified that increased billing after smart meter installation stems from seasonal weather changes, appliance usage and household demand, rather than faulty devices. Data analysis of over 3 lakh consumers in the Raipur division showed that higher bills during March, April, May and June 2026 resulted from heavy summer use of air conditioners, coolers, electric vehicle charging and water pumps.
By August 2026, power usage among these consumers dropped by 32% to 57% compared to May 2026, reflecting reduced demand.
Smart meters eliminate human error and reader discretion. Consumers can track real-time usage every 30 minutes through the ‘Mor Bijli’ mobile app and web portal. Consumers with billing queries can call the toll-free number 1912 or contact the nearest power distribution centre for technical inspection.
