Raipur police have arrested two men within 30 hours of a break-in at a chartered accountant’s office in Civil Lines, recovering stolen cash worth ₹7.8 lakh from their possession.
The main accused, Umesh Porte (39), a former employee at Tarwani & Associates, planned the heist using his knowledge of the office’s cash handling routines. Porte, a resident of Bilaspur who has a past record of violent offences, executed the theft with his accomplice, Laxminarayan Dhruw (24).
The incident came to light on 21 July 2026 when office cashier Aparna Nayak was alerted by a driver around 9:30 am. Upon arriving at the premises with firm owner Chetan Tarwani, Nayak found that an intruder had broken into the office overnight, cut the cash counter locks with a cutter, and fled with the cash.
A case was registered at Civil Lines police station under Sections 331(4) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Cyber) Smritik Rajnala and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Zone) Tarkeshwar Patel formed a joint team comprising the Anti-Crime and Cyber Unit alongside Civil Lines police to track down the culprits.
Investigators analyzed CCTV footage from the area and questioned current and former employees. Suspicions fell on Porte after intelligence linked him to the scene. A police team tracked down Porte in Bilaspur and detained him. During interrogation, Porte confessed to the crime and named Dhruw, who was subsequently apprehended from Torwa in Bilaspur.
Police recovered the entire stolen amount of ₹7.8 lakh from the duo before placing them under formal arrest.
