Raipur
A potentially major accident was narrowly averted in a residential society in Raipur, the state capital of Chhattisgarh, when a lift malfunctioned on 24 November. The incident took place late at night at the Indraprastha Phase-2 Apartment complex in the DD Nagar area.
The Incident
A mother and daughter pressed the lift button on the ground floor to go to their home. The lift car arrived but the doors did not open. Suddenly, the lift shot up at high speed, going out of control, and crashed into the ceiling of the eighth-floor maintenance room.
Residents said the incident occurred around 11 pm. CCTV footage of the mishap is now viral on social media. The video shows the women waiting as the lift accelerates upward and hits the top with a loud bang, causing them to step back in shock.
Fortunately, no one was inside the lift during the malfunction, preventing a major tragedy.
Residents Raise Safety Concerns
Following the incident, residents have raised serious questions about lift maintenance and safety checks. Local resident Chandrashekhar Prasad alleged that the building authorities do not conduct regular servicing. He also claimed that similar incidents had occurred earlier, causing minor injuries to a few people.
Police Inquiry Underway
Even though no one was injured and no official complaint has been filed, the viral video has prompted DD Nagar police to begin gathering information on the incident.
