Kopra Reservoir Set for Ramsar Tag as State Govt Sends Proposal for Approval

Raipur, November 21, 2025: To strengthen ecological conservation efforts in Chhattisgarh, the State Government has submitted a proposal to designate Kopra Reservoir in Bilaspur district as a Ramsar Site. Acting on the directions of Forest and Climate Change Minister Kedar Kashyap, the move positions this significant water body—known for its unique natural and human-made features—for national and international recognition. The reservoir has long served as a lifeline for the region, supporting irrigation, water security, and a rich biodiversity network.
Ramsar Status to Elevate the Region’s Global Profile
Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap expressed confidence that recognising Kopra Reservoir as a Ramsar Site will bring the region into greater national and global focus. Primarily fed by rainwater and adjoining streams, the reservoir meets the drinking water needs of surrounding communities and serves as the main source of irrigation. The fertile land around it underscores its importance to the agricultural prosperity of nearby villages and towns.
A Haven of Exceptional Biodiversity
Kopra Reservoir and its surroundings provide a secure habitat for a variety of bird species, aquatic life, and plant varieties throughout the year. Notably, a large number of migratory birds arrive annually. The reservoir hosts abundant fish species, aquatic plants, amphibians, reptiles, and insects, making it an area of exceptionally rich biodiversity and significant ecological value.
An Ideal Habitat for Rare Bird Species
According to the State Wetland Authority, Kopra Reservoir is an ideal conservation zone for rare bird species such as the River Tern, Common Pochard, and Egyptian Vulture. Experts confirm that the site fulfils Ramsar Criteria 02, 03, and 05, marking it as an exemplary wetland ecosystem deserving of international protection.
Tourism Potential Expected to Grow
Given its ecological importance, the State Government has forwarded the proposal for Ramsar recognition to the Central Government. If approved, Kopra Reservoir will receive international-level protection, boosting its scientific, environmental, and tourism significance.
Strengthening Rural Livelihoods and Environmental Balance
Under various government initiatives, plans are underway to enhance environmental conservation, water preservation, biodiversity enrichment, and rural livelihood development in the region. These efforts aim to protect natural resources while supporting local communities, ensuring a sustainable balance between people and the ecosystem.
