Congress leader killed in Bastar

Raipur
Vikram Bais, a 40-year-old Congress leader, met a tragic end when he was fatally shot in Narayanpur district, Bastar, late on Monday evening. The attack, suspected to be driven by personal enmity, resulted in his immediate demise, instilling fear and uncertainty in the community.
The assailants, yet to be identified, fired three shots at Bais in the heart of the settlement, causing his instant death before fleeing the scene. Superintendent of Police Prabhat Kumar disclosed that Bais was enjoying a leisurely walk near his home in Bakhrupara, Narayanpur, when assailants on a motorcycle approached, threatening and ultimately shooting him thrice in rapid succession.
Dispelling any Maoist involvement, the Superintendent assured thorough investigations. He explained that while Maoists usually leave propaganda materials at crime scenes, none were found here, indicating a different motive. The promise of swift capture of the perpetrators was made by the SP.
Bais held significant positions within the Congress party, serving as the vice president of the Block Congress Committee and as the secretary of the Narayanpur Transport Union. The sound of gunshots drew nearby residents, who found him lying in a pool of blood. Rushed to the district hospital, doctors declared him deceased, leaving the settlement gripped with fear.
Bais, along with PCC Chief Deepak Baij and former MLA Chandan Kashyap, had long been ardent supporters of the Congress party. This incident echoes the recent attack on Congress member Joga Pdiyam in Dantewada, which occurred a decade after his son’s tragic murder by rebels in Aranpur. These incidents follow a string of attacks on BJP leaders by Maoists in Bastar over the past year and a half.
