Chhattisgarh CM urges union finance min for exemption of 12 per cent GST on PG and hostel rents

Raipur: Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel has written a letter to union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, seeking the exemption of the 12 per cent GST burden on the rent of PG and hostel accommodations to be borne by the students.

Expressing concern over the recent decision by the Authority for Advance Rulings under GST to impose 12 per cent GST on rent payments, Baghel emphasized the potential hardship it could cause to economically weaker and lower-middle-class parents who are already grappling with the impact of inflation. He further highlighted that such a move might lead to many talented and underprivileged students being compelled to abandon their education and return to their hometowns due to the additional financial burden.

Chief minister urged finance minister Sitharaman to intervene at the Central Government level and direct the relevant authorities to reinstate the previous exemption for hostel residents, thereby providing them with much-needed relief.
