Shri P M Prasad, CMD CCL has been recommended for the post of Chairman, Coal India.


P M Prasad has assumed the charge of Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD) of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) on September 01, 2020. Prior to this, Prasad was working as the CMD, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL).
After graduating in BE (Mining) from Osmania University in 1984, Prasad joined Coal India Limited in August 1984 and since then untill April 2015 he has worked in various positions ranging from Trainee Officer to General Manager in Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) and contributed to the growth of these companies.
Prasad did his M Tech in Opencast Mining, also known as open-pit mining, in 1991 from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. Prasad obtained First Class Mines Manager Certificate conducted by DGMS in 1988. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Law from Nagpur University in 1997.
Has been honored by the Secretary, Ministry of Coal, Government of India and Chairman, Coal India Ltd. in 1995 for his efforts in towards re-mining the area affected by underground fire in DRC mine of WCL in 1994-95.
Since March, 2012, Prasad, as General Manager of Lingaraj Area, MCL had started Kaniha Opencast Coal Project and and successfully operated it.
General Manager, Hingula Area, development of 26.00 million tonnes of Coal Reserve for Mining by Diversion of Drain in Hingula Opencast Area in MCL in the year 2014-15 and commissioning of New Railway Siding No. 9 at Talcher Coalfields are some of his special achievements.
In May 2015, he joined NTPC as Executive Director (Coal Mining). He is credited for expediting the process of allocation of MDO projects and award of Pakribarwadih coal block (NTPC’s first project) and issue of NIT for remaining coal blocks.
In March 2016, he took over as Executive Director cum Head of Projects, NTPC Hazaribagh, Jharkhand and took up the challenge of starting coal mining operations in Pakribarwadih Coal Block.
Coal production started there in February 2017. The first coal rake was flagged off by Chief Minister of Jharkhand on February 16, 2017 in the presence of the then Cabinet Minister Arun Jaitley, Coal Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State Jayant Sinha. During his tenure as Project Head, the Pakribarwadih project was awarded the first prize in the Swarna Shakti Puraskar for Coal Mining Projects in 2016.
From February 2018 to July 2019, Prasad was Director Technical (Projects & Planning), NCL, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited. NCL was felicitated with the Best Green Business Leader of the Year award during the World Environment Summit held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on June, 2018 for its outstanding performance in the field of Environment.
He was also given the additional charge of Director (Technical) of WCL and BCCL before being elevated to the post of CMD, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) on August 2, 2019.
