Mother Allegedly Sells Infant for Rs 1.80 Lakh in Jashpur, Five Held; Infant Rescued from West Bengal

Raipur, October 14.
Chhattisgarh police tracked a 9-to-10-month-old infant to West Bengal and rescued the child safely after the baby’s mother allegedly sold the baby for Rs 1.80 lakh in the Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh. Five people, including the mother, have been arrested in connection with the case.
Police stated that the incident took place in March 2026. Investigators uncovered a human trafficking nexus following intelligence inputs regarding the transaction. Subsequent inquiries established the direct involvement of the child’s mother and local accomplices who allegedly brokered the deal for Rs 1.80 lakh.
Acting on technical leads, a police team traced the infant to West Bengal. Officers secured the baby and placed the child under protective state custody. Two residents of West Bengal have also been identified as key players in the alleged trafficking ring, with their roles under detailed scrutiny.
Kunkuri police registered a case under relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). All five arrested accused were produced before a local court and remanded in judicial custody.
Authorities stated that further investigation is underway to map the entire network, verify the roles of other potential intermediaries, and establish the complete sequence of events.
