IHC launches ‘IHC Connect’ series with roundtable on strengthening constructive public discourse

New Delhi, December 6, 2025
The India Habitat Centre (IHC) has launched a new discussion series, ‘IHC Connect,’ aimed at creating space for thoughtful engagement on key social and cultural issues shaping contemporary India. The inaugural programme, “The Role of Media in Fostering Constructive Public Discourse,” was held on December 5, 2025. It was organised by the Habitat Library & Research Centre in collaboration with the Office of Public Affairs of the Baha’is of India.

Media’s responsibility and current challenges under the spotlight

The roundtable focused on the media’s critical role in maintaining the integrity of public discourse by ensuring factual reporting, prioritising meaningful issues, and giving space to diverse voices.

Participants discussed the declining quality of public dialogue in India and worldwide, noting the rise of disinformation, polarization, partisanship, and superficial debates driven by social media. A central question guiding the conversation was:
“How can the media remain a trusted source of facts and support consultative, well-informed dialogue for societal well-being?”

Senior journalists from print, electronic, and digital media joined the discussion, along with media educators, podcasters, and communicators working in film and other platforms. The conversation was described as meaningful, candid, and wide-ranging, addressing both evolving challenges and emerging opportunities.

“Media can regain public trust,” says IHC Director

Moderating the session, Prof. (Dr.) K. G. Suresh, Director of the India Habitat Centre, expressed confidence that the media can regain public trust and, through constructive and inclusive public discourse, contribute significantly to the vision of a Viksit Bharat.

A new neutral platform for national dialogue

With ‘IHC Connect,’ the IHC aims to continue offering a neutral space for informed, non-partisan, and impactful conversations on issues central to India’s social and cultural landscape.
