Raipur: In a significant boost to wildlife conservation efforts in Chhattisgarh, a rare Indian giant flying squirrel was recently sighted in the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve during a routine forest patrol, forest officials said. The sighting is being viewed as a strong indicator of a healthy forest ecosystem and the success of ongoing habitat protection measures in the reserve.
Officials noted that the presence of the elusive nocturnal mammal reflects the ecological richness of the reserve, as the species is known to inhabit only dense and well-preserved forest landscapes.
According to the forest department, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap have directed authorities to continue strengthening wildlife protection and habitat conservation initiatives across the state. Sustained conservation measures have helped enhance biodiversity and provide a secure habitat for several rare and sensitive wildlife species in the reserve.
Unlike birds, the Indian giant flying squirrel does not fly but glides between trees using a specialized membrane stretching between its fore and hind limbs. The nocturnal animal spends daylight hours resting in tree hollows and emerges at night to forage for food. Wildlife experts consider its presence an important ecological indicator, as the species thrives only in undisturbed forest habitats.
Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve Deputy Director Varun Jain said the sighting validates the effectiveness of ongoing conservation efforts within the reserve. He added that the department remains committed to protecting wildlife and preserving critical habitats.
Forest officials believe documentation of the rare species will help generate greater awareness among students, researchers, and local communities about biodiversity conservation. The sighting is also expected to enhance the reserve’s appeal for eco-tourism and wildlife enthusiasts visiting Chhattisgarh.
