Congress stages protest in Raipur against power tariff hike and smart meters

Raipur. The Congress party on Wednesday staged a strong protest against the recent electricity tariff hike and installation of smart meters outside the headquarters of the Chhattisgarh State Power Companies in Dangania.

The protest was led by Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee president Deepak Baij and Raipur City District Congress Committee president Shrikumar Shanker Menon, with participation from several senior Congress leaders and workers. Protesters raised slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, accusing it of burdening the public.

Congress leaders alleged that the government’s decision has imposed an additional financial strain on common citizens and farmers. According to the party, domestic consumers are facing an increase of 30 to 50 paise per unit, while non-domestic consumers are seeing a rise of 20 to 40 paise per unit. The tariff for agricultural power supply has also been increased by 40 paise per unit.

Addressing the gathering, Shrikumar Shanker Menon demanded an immediate rollback of the tariff hike and withdrawal of the decision to install smart meters across the state. He alleged that the new billing system and increased rates would severely impact low-income families and the farming community.

The protest, held at around 11:30 am, saw senior Congress workers and local residents assembling at the main gate of the power company headquarters in support of the agitation.
