PWD sets up 4-member panel to probe road work, corruption

Raipur: The Public Works Department (PWD) has constituted a four-member committee of senior officials to probe complaints of sub-standard construction and corruption in the renovation and upgrading of the Rajnandgaon-Khairagarh main road and the Rajnandgaon-Mohla-Manpur road projects.
The committee will examine various aspects of the construction work along with the complaints and submit its report to the Engineer-in-Chief within three days.
Chief Engineer V S Koram, Superintending Engineer Rajiv Nashine, and Executive Engineers Prabhat Saxena and C S Ogre are part of the panel.
The committee will examine the possibility of recommending a high-level inquiry by an independent agency into the Rajnandgaon-Khairagarh and Rajnandgaon-Mohla-Manpur road projects. It will assess technical parameters through laboratory tests, including the quality of granular sub-base (GSB), wet mix macadam (WMM), sub-grade, bitumen quantity, road thickness, density, gradation, levels and undulations.
The panel will evaluate the role of officials responsible for monitoring quality as well as the executing agency. It will also decide whether payments for the projects should be withheld until the inquiry concludes.
Action will be recommended against those found guilty if quality compromises, financial irregularities or corruption are established.
The committee will suggest measures to ensure safe traffic movement in areas such as Dongargaon-Kumarda, where road stretches were dug up and left incomplete. Suggested steps include immediate repairs, warning signs and alternative traffic arrangements.
