Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Electrification Work Gains Momentum

Electrification work on the 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor is progressing rapidly alongside civil construction and track laying work.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor features an advanced 2×25 kV Overhead Traction System, a high-speed railway electrification technology implemented for the first time in India. The system provides stable power supply to trains operating at speeds of up to 320 km/h.

Power from the national grid will reach specially designed Grid Substations before distribution to 14 Traction Substations along the corridor. Five traction substations are located in Maharashtra at Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, and the Thane depot. The remaining nine are situated in Gujarat at Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Mahemdavad, Ahmedabad, and the Sabarmati depot.

These substations will supply power to different sections of the route, ensuring smooth transition of power supply between segments without disruption to train services.

The corridor incorporates 31 Switching Posts to maintain continuous power supply and isolate faults quickly when necessary. 16 Distribution Substations are being set up to power stations, signaling systems, maintenance facilities, and operational infrastructure.

Overhead Electrical Wires will span across 1,125 Track Kilometres, including depots, supported by nearly 22,000 Steel Masts and over 25,700 Cantilever Assemblies.

The masts, ranging from 10.5 to 14.5 Metres in height, support a Compound Catenary System introduced for the first time in the country. Wires are installed with calculated mechanical tension to enable the train Pantograph to collect power continuously without sparking or power fluctuations at high speeds.

Key components of the electrification infrastructure are being manufactured domestically under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. These include major transformers, cross arms on overhead equipment masts, ground wires, protection wires, and feeder wires forming the top electrical network.

Components related to the Traction Power Supply System, Distribution Power System, and Electro-Mechanical Works are also being produced within the country. Domestic manufacturing of these precision parts supports local industry, generates specialized jobs, reduces import dependence, and creates a domestic base for future high-speed rail projects.

Early Earthquake Detection Seismometers will be installed at all 14 Traction Substations to detect seismic activity and initiate emergency safety measures to halt trains within seconds.

A total of 28 Seismometers are being deployed across the project. 22 will sit at traction substations and switching posts along the corridor, while 6 additional units will be installed in earthquake-prone areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

A Centralized Control Center will monitor the entire electrical network in real time, with Automated Protection Systems configured to respond instantly to maintain operational safety.
