15-Year-Old Girl Commits Suicide Over Mobile Phone Demand; Chhattisgarh Sees Three Suicides in a Month Over Phones

In a tragic incident, a 15-year-old girl reportedly took her own life after not receiving a mobile phone. Her body was discovered hanging from a tree on Monday morning. The girl had been persistently requesting a mobile phone from her mother for several days. The incident occurred in the Patthalgaon police station area.
According to reports, Illush Kujur, a resident of Kachar Barpara, lived with his family. His daughter, Asha Kujur (15), had dropped out of school after the 8th grade. Despite her repeated requests for a mobile phone, her mother had delayed fulfilling this demand, citing financial difficulties.
On Sunday night, Asha made another plea for a new mobile phone. Her mother explained that there was no money available due to agricultural expenses and promised to purchase a new phone once they sold their rice crop. Asha remained insistent, and reportedly left home on Sunday evening after being upset by her mother’s response.
The following morning, when her family woke up, they found her missing. After searching the vicinity, they discovered her body hanging from a tree near their home, with a scarf used as a noose. Neighbors, alerted by the commotion, gathered, and the police were notified. The police arrived and, with the help of villagers, recovered the body.
According to the police, the reason for the minor’s suicide was her inability to obtain a new mobile phone, as indicated by the family. An investigation is underway, and the body has been sent for post-mortem.
In Chhattisgarh, this incident is part of a concerning trend, with three children having taken their own lives in the past month over issues related to mobile phones. In all three cases, the children had demanded mobile phones and games from their parents. Experts highlight that mobile addiction is increasingly interfering with children’s mental and physical development.
In Bilaspur district, a 13-year-old boy hanged himself in his home’s bathroom after his father refused to give him a mobile phone late at night. His body was found by his grandmother around 2:30 a.m. The incident occurred in the Sarkanda police station area of Ashok Nagar.
In Bhilai, Durg district, an 11th-grade student committed suicide by hanging himself. Reports suggest that after a parent-teacher meeting at school, his father scolded him for poor academic performance and excessive mobile phone use. The boy used a punching bag belt to hang himself in his room. The incident took place in Vinoba Nagar Junwani, Smriti Nagar.
