Fake marriage bureau run using AI profiles busted in Durg, one arrested

Raipur, October 30.

Supela police in Durg district arrested a man on Friday for operating a fake marriage bureau that used artificial intelligence (AI)-generated photographs to dupe citizens across multiple states.

Police seized property valued at ₹2,83,600 from the operation center near Union Bank at Uttar Gangotri Bhawan. The recovered items include 22 keypad mobile phones, four Android devices, 16 SIM cards, a computer system, internet Wi-Fi routers, bank checkbooks, and ₹1,64,000 in cash.

The main accused, 24-year-old Paramanand Yadav, a resident of Oteband village in Nandini who currently lives in Nehru Nagar East, ran the illegal call center for nearly three months.

Acting on a tip-off received on 29 October 2026, a police team led by Supela police station house officer Inspector S.N. Singh raided the premises. Officers found four young women working alongside the operator.

Investigators learned that Yadav advertised fake matrimonial platforms, including Kalyan Matrimony, Elite Match Matrimony, and Future Partner, on Facebook and Instagram. The network used AI-generated images of non-existent women and fake mobile numbers to attract prospective grooms.

The four women employed at the center told police that they had been hired under the pretext of a legitimate job offering a monthly salary of ₹7,000. Following a two-day training period, they worked as marriage counsellors, interacting with clients over the telephone and collecting initial registration fees of ₹2,000 through digital payment QR codes. Once payments were received, the operators blocked the victims’ telephone numbers.

Police checks revealed that the call center handled between 20 and 50 calls daily. Several bank accounts used by the network had active complaints registered against them on the central government’s Samanway portal.

Supela police registered a case under Sections 317(2) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) under crime number 1630/2026. Officers produced the accused before a court, which remanded him in judicial custody.

Sub-inspector Khelan Sahu, Namita Tekam, Mithlesh Sahu, and Santosh Nirmalkar assisted in the operation.

Durg police urged citizens to verify the credentials of online matrimonial services before sharing personal documents or transferring registration fees. Officials advised individuals encountering online financial fraud to contact the cyber helpline at 1930 or file complaints through the official portal, www.cybercrime.gov.in.
