Charandas Mahant to be Leader of Opposition in Chhattisgarh, Deepak Baij to remain Congress state president

Raipur Sakti MLA and former Speaker Dr Charandas Mahant has been elected as the leader of the Congress legislative party and the opposition leader in the assembly. This order has been issued by the party’s National General Secretary, K.C. Venugopal on the recommendation of AICC president Mallikarjuna Kharge. Meanwhile, Deepak Baij will continue as the Congress state president. A meeting of the Congress legislative party was held in Raipur on December 13. In this meeting, the party’s National Treasurer Ajay Maken and State In-charge Kumari Selja held discussions with the Congress legislators. After the meeting, Maken had stated that the responsibility of deciding the opposition leader lies with the National President, Mallikarjun Kharge. When the Congress party swept the election in 2018 to come to the power, Charandas Mahant was appointed as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. In 2023, he won the elections from the Sakti Assembly constituency, defeating BJP’s Khilawan Sahu by a margin of 12,395 votes.
