Six arrested for kidnapping and extortion in Raipur, two rescued

The city police on Thursday rescued two men from Dhamtari who were kidnapped and held hostage for extortion in the Azad Chowk area. Officials arrested six persons in connection with the crime and recovered weapons, cash, and mobile phones.

DCP (West) Sandeep Patel directed immediate action after receiving a tip-off that two persons were being illegally confined and assaulted in a hut near Ghorahi Talab in Ramkund. A team led by Additional DCP Rahul Dev Sharma and ACP Ishu Agrawal cordoned off the area and conducted a search operation.

The police rescued Jeevan Yadu and Rakesh Sharma, both residents of Dhamtari. Investigations revealed the victims were abducted from near Karbala Talab over a financial dispute involving ₹2 lakh. The accused allegedly used firearms to threaten the victims, forced them to sign property documents, and robbed them of cash, bank papers, mobile phones, and a motorcycle.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Kamran Abbas (29), Naveen alias Nannu Dheemar (19), Lucky Nishad alias Chhota Chicken (19), Rakesh Dheevar (24), Anil Dheevar (30), and Hariom Sonkar (47).

The police seized ₹3,500 cash, two pistols, two live cartridges, and six mobile phones from the possession of the accused.

Records show several of the arrested persons have criminal histories. Hariom Sonkar faces 14 previous cases involving extortion, fraud, and kidnapping across Raipur and Dhamtari districts. Lucky Nishad was previously booked for attempt to murder, while Kamran Abbas has been involved in gambling cases.

The Azad Chowk police have registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)308(5), 296, 351(3), 127(8), 115(2), 117(2), 61, 140(1), 310(2), 111 — along with Sections 25 & 27 of the Arms Act.

Azad Chowk SHO Ajit Singh Rajput stated raids are ongoing to nab other suspects who remain absconding.
