Raipur Tragedy: Two Cousins Drown in Water-Filled Pit Near School

Raipur: Two young cousins drowned in a water-filled pit dug by a private builder near a government school in the Kabir Nagar police station area of Raipur on Sunday evening. The pit had been left uncovered and was filled with rainwater.

The deceased boys were identified as Satyam (8) and Alok (7). The two had come to the area to attend the birthday party of their maternal aunt’s son.

The tragic incident occurred around 3 pm on Sunday when the children were playing near the road. They accidentally fell into the deep pit and were unable to climb out, leading to their death by drowning. Their families began searching for them later in the evening when they did not return home.

Neighbours discovered the boys floating in the water, pulled them out immediately, and rushed them to the hospital, where doctors declared both dead on arrival.

Following the tragedy, angry family members and local residents staged a ‘chakka jam’ (roadblock) demanding compensation from the authorities. The protest took place on the Hirapur–Jarway Road, causing a traffic jam of around 3 kilometres on Ring Road No. 3.

Protesters alleged that they had complained about the open pit multiple times, but the administration failed to take action.

Police teams from Amanaka and Kabir Nagar police stations, along with local administrative officials, reached the spot and pacified the agitated crowd, urging them to clear the road. The blockade was lifted following police intervention.
