Raipur hotelier, son arrested in liquor scam

Raipur
The Economic Offences Investigation/Anti-Corruption Bureau on Friday arrested Nitesh Purohit and his son Yash Purohit, owners of Giriraj Hotel, in connection with the Chhattisgarh liquor scam. The two were arrested in a case registered under sections 7 and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and sections 420, 467, 468, 471, and 120B of the Indian Penal Code.
The bureau had earlier arrested former excise commissioner Niranjan Das on Thursday in the same case.
The trio had been absconding since March 2024. In September and December 2024, the Supreme Court had granted them protection from coercive action. They appeared before the bureau on notice but did not cooperate with the investigation. The Supreme Court lifted the stay on coercive action on 17 September 2025, after which the arrests were made.
The bureau said the hotelier father-son duo were key members of the syndicate. They were responsible for collecting, storing, and distributing illegal proceeds from the liquor scam to public servants and private individuals.
The accused were presented before the Special Court (Prevention of Corruption Act) in Raipur on Friday. The court granted police remand until 25 September 2025, for further interrogation. The investigation is ongoing.
