PM Modi praises Coal India’s eco-tourism efforts

Raipur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the efforts of Coal India to develop abandoned/unused mines as eco-tourism destinations. This includes SECL’s Kenapara and Ananya Vatika centers.
Chhattisgarh’s abandoned coal mine in Bishrampur has been transformed into an eco-tourism destination, providing a source of income for the local tribal people. The 10 quarries of Bishrampur mines have contributed over 387 lakh tons of coal over 57 years, making the state one of the major contributors to the nation’s energy security. Quarry No. 6, with its unique geo-physical conditions and easy connectivity to National Highway-43, was selected for development due to its fascinating water body. With an area of over 10.57 hectares and an average depth of around 39 feet, it has been developed for pisciculture and boating. The site now boasts two motor boats, a floating raft, farmer cottage, sitting room, store room and 32 cages for pisciculture. The next phase of development includes landscaping, promotion of latest water sports, cottages for stay and a cultural center to further enhance the entertainment experience for visitors.
In the near future itself, Kenapara eco-tourism project of SECL will be a path-breaking initiative for other subsidiaries of Coal India Ltd(CIL) to replicate, in tandem with the mine closure /reclamation programme of the coal sector of the country. Needless to say, such environmental-friendly initiatives will go a long way in restoring our fragile eco-system and providing an avenue for livelihood to the marginalised sections of the society.
