Both accidents occurred while villagers attempted to rescue those who had fallen into the wells. It is reported that the cause of death in both cases was the leakage of toxic gas.In the Janjgir-Champa incident, five people, including a father and his two sons, died. In Korba, a father, his daughter, and two others lost their lives. Upon receiving the information, the police arrived at the scene, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), who retrieved the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination.In Korba, three people descended into a well to rescue an elderly man, but all of them perished. The police arrived at the scene to investigate. Upon learning about the deaths of four people in Korba, a large number of villagers gathered at the site.In Janjgir-Champa, the bodies were retrieved from the well. Around 7:30 AM, people descended into the well one by one to save a person. His two sons and other people descended into the well to rescue him after hearing his wife’s screams, but none returned alive. One of the deceased’s wives had her birthday today. They descended into the well to retrieve a wooden cover blown off by the wind.An old well in the village had not been used for a long time. Villagers had covered it with old wooden planks, which fell into the well due to rain and strong wind. Ramchandra Jaiswal went inside to retrieve the planks but did not return, leading to others descending one by one.Ramesh Patel (50 years old), a neighbor, first descended into the well to rescue Ramchandra Jaiswal but started suffocating. His two sons, Rajendra (20 years old) and Jitendra (25 years old), also descended to save him. When they didn’t return, their neighbor, Tikeshwar Chandra (25 years old), went inside to rescue them. However, due to the gas leakage, five people, including the father and his two sons, died.Upon receiving the information, Birra police and the tehsildar arrived at the scene with their team. SDRF teams began retrieving the bodies. SP Vivek Shukla was also present. Local divers were not sent into the well due to the lack of oxygen masks. After retrieving the bodies, they were sent to the hospital.Tikeshwar Chandra, the last person to descend to save the others, got married three months ago. Coincidentally, today is his wife’s birthday, and she had posted a birthday status on WhatsApp. Ramesh Patel was a farmer. His son Jitendra Patel has a five-month-old child. Rajendra Patel had studied up to the 10th grade and helped with farming.\Doctors Suspect H2S, Carbon Monoxide, and Methane Gas in the WellFSL team expert Dr. Satyajit Kosharia stated that water is present about 26 feet below. There is a possibility of H2S, carbon monoxide, and methane gases in the well. The well is narrow and covered, with no light reaching inside, causing the water to stagnate. Oxygen levels are also low.Water samples have been taken and will be sent to the FSL lab. The final report will reveal which gas caused the deaths.Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, Vishnudeo Sai, has expressed profound grief over the deaths of four people due to drowning in a well in Korba district and five people due to a toxic gas accident in a well in Sakti district. He has extended his condolences to the bereaved families. The Chief Minister has directed officials to provide an assistance amount of Rs 9 lakh to the family of each deceased person, which includes Rs 4 lakh under RBC 6-4 and Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s relief fund.
