India Near Naxal-Free, Says Amit Shah; Bhupesh Baghel Rejects ‘Shielding’ Allegations

Raipur. Amit Shah announced in the Lok Sabha that India has effectively achieved its target of becoming nearly Naxal-free by the March 31, 2026 deadline. Speaking during a discussion on Left Wing Extremism (LWE), he said the “Red Terror” that once affected multiple states has been significantly dismantled.

However, the statement triggered a sharp political exchange, as Shah accused the previous Congress government in Chhattisgarh of shielding insurgents. Referring to former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, he said the government had protected Naxalites, adding that he could present proof if required.

Key Highlights from Amit Shah’s Statement:

  • Eradication from Bastar: Shah stated that Naxalism has been almost eliminated from Bastar, once its stronghold. He highlighted that villages now have schools, ration shops, healthcare, along with Aadhaar cards and 5 kg food grain distribution.
  • Counter-Insurgency Data: In the last three years, 706 Naxals were killed, while over 4,800 cadres surrendered under the government’s rehabilitation programme. Currently, only two districts remain Naxal-affected.
  • Ideological Criticism: Shah blamed the spread of Naxalism on Leftist ideology during the tenure of Indira Gandhi, claiming it hampered development across 12 crore people and 17% of India’s landmass.
  • Rejecting Comparisons: He criticized comparisons between Naxals and freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh and Birsa Munda, stating such parallels are misleading and inappropriate.
  • Urban Naxals Remark: Shah also targeted intellectual supporters, questioning why their “humanity” is not extended to civilians affected by insurgent violence.

Baghel Calls Allegations ‘Baseless’

Responding strongly, Bhupesh Baghel termed the allegations a “downright lie” and challenged the Centre to make any evidence public.

He emphasized that no politics should be done on the Naxal issue and asserted that his government had been actively taking action against insurgents. Baghel also highlighted that his administration set up security camps in remote Bastar areas, which helped strengthen ongoing operations.

He further noted that the Congress party has lost several leaders to Naxal violence, urging all sides to avoid political blame games on matters of national security.
