Gunbattle between police and Naxals underway at Karregutta hill on Chhattisgarh-Telangana border; over 20 Naxals reportedly killed

A gunfight has been ongoing since Wednesday morning between security forces and Naxals at Karregutta hill, located on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border. As per reports, over 20 Naxals have been killed in the exchange of fire. However, there has been no official confirmation of the toll so far.

Just two days ago, security personnel had gunned down a woman Naxal in an encounter at the same Karregutta hill. Her body and a weapon were recovered from the spot. In the Naxal operation ongoing for the past 14 days, the forces have eliminated a total of four women Naxals so far. All four bodies have been recovered.

During the encounter on Monday, CRPF Assistant Commandant Sagar Borade was injured in an IED blast. The explosion was so intense that he lost one of his legs. He has been referred to AIIMS Delhi, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Minister Ramvichar Netam shared information about the incident on his social media account as well.

On Tuesday, Bastar IG Sundarraj P said the operation against Naxals is ongoing. So far, the bodies of four Naxals have been recovered from different encounters. Security personnel also recovered .303 rifles and other explosives from the site. Several top Naxal cadres are believed to have suffered losses, and there may be more injured.

In a previous encounter, three women Naxals carrying bounties of ₹8 lakh each were killed. The IG stated that the operation is still in progress, and more information will be shared upon its conclusion.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has claimed that Naxalism will be eradicated from the country by March 2026. Chhattisgarh’s Home Minister Vijay Sharma is also consistently formulating policies to eliminate Naxalism and providing reports to the central government. In the last year and a half, more than 350 Naxals have been killed in encounters in Bastar alone. Now, top Naxal leaders are being cornered.

Security forces have taken control of a section of Karregutta hill located on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border. After a strenuous 9-day climb of nearly 5,000 feet, they reached the summit and drove out the Naxals, hoisting the national flag there.
