Congress to Hold ‘Save Constitution Rally’ in Chhattisgarh on May 8 Amid BJP Criticism

Raipur
The Congress party is set to hold a ‘Save Constitution Rally’ in Chhattisgarh on May 8. Preparations for the rally were discussed at a recent meeting of party leaders in Bilaspur.
Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee President Deepak Baij stated that the central government is weakening the constitution, necessitating the rally.
In response, Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao countered that the Congress has consistently violated the constitution. “It is a political party that misuses the constitution. Now that they are out of power, they suddenly remember to protect the constitution,” he said.
“When the time comes, they partition the country. When out of power, they organise ‘Bharat Jodo Yatras’. When in power, they oppose caste census, and support it when out of power. Instead of a ‘Save Constitution Rally’, they should hold a ‘Save Congress Rally’,” added Sao.
The Congress party held a meeting in Bilaspur to discuss the upcoming ‘Save Constitution Rally’.
According to PCC President Deepak Baij, the ‘Save Constitution’ campaign aims to counter the Modi government’s alleged attacks on the constitution and democratic institutions, its politics of vendetta, economic mismanagement, and systematic undermining of social justice.
“This campaign will amplify the voice of the common citizen, highlight grassroots concerns, and reaffirm the values enshrined in our constitution,” Baij stated.
AICC Co-Secretary and Co-in-charge Vijay Jangid said, “Through this campaign, we are united to protect the constitution, uphold the values of freedom, equality, and justice, and fight for the rights, dignity, and future of us Indians. We will remain steadfast in our fight for the poor of this country, advocate for their rights, and raise their voice.”
The rally was initially planned to be held at Kosa Nala Baudh Bhumi in Bhilai, Durg district. Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and the Congress organisation had made extensive preparations, mobilising workers from across the district. Arrangements for the stage, route, and publicity were finalised. However, the rally was postponed due to the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 13, in which CRPF personnel were martyred.
Several prominent Congress leaders from the state are expected to participate in the Bilaspur rally, including Bhupesh Baghel, Deepak Baij, TS Singhdeo, and other senior figures. The Congress aims to convey the message that protecting the constitution is the need of the hour.
Bhupesh Baghel has previously stated that this is not just a fight for the Congress but for the country’s constitution. With the new date and venue confirmed, Congress workers are reportedly energised for the event.
The Congress party emphasises that the ‘Save Constitution Rally’ is not merely a symbolic event but a public engagement campaign. Party workers will interact with the public to discuss issues such as the constitution, democracy, social justice, economic inequality, and exploitation.
The Congress alleges that the BJP-led central government is consistently weakening the independence of constitutional bodies and attacking the core spirit of the constitution through anti-people policies. As part of this campaign, the party will conduct rallies at the state, district, and assembly levels, followed by door-to-door outreach to raise awareness about the constitution.
