According to police, ‘fired at police While fleeing, hit by three bullets, had over 35 cases filed’

In a first encounter under Chhattisgarh’s Vishnu Deo Sai government, the Bhilai Crime Branch team nutralised notorious criminal Amit Josh. When the police team attempted to apprehend him, he opened fire, and in the retaliatory action, he was killed. The incident occurred in the Bhilai Nagar police station area.
Josh was the prime suspect in a shooting incident at Globe Chowk, Bhilai, with a bounty of Rs 10,000 on his head. He had been on the run for four months. Police, receiving intelligence that he was in Bhilai, cornered him. Josh had over 35 cases registered against him.
The encounter took place near Jayanti Stadium in Bhilai, where he had previously fired upon three individuals, injuring two.
Superintendent of Police SP Jitendra Shukla stated that Josh was a notorious criminal known for attacking people with knives, blades, and guns. In July 2024, he shot three people, injuring two, before going into hiding.
The police kept close vigil on him and learned he had been in Bhilai for three days. Multiple teams were formed, and raids were conducted at his known locations, including lodges and other hideouts.
During the encounter near Jayanti Stadium, Josh opened fire at one of the police teams. In the retaliatory firing, he was hit in the leg but continued shooting as he tried to escape, eventually sustaining fatal gunshot wounds.
Josh had 35 cases filed across various police stations, including 25 in Bhilai Nagar, 4 in Supela, and cases in Durg Kotwali, Nevai, Kursipar, and Padmanabhpur.
Upon spotting the police, he immediately started firing. Police warned him to stop, but he continued, prompting the police to respond with gunfire.
