CM Baghel Challenges GST on Ganga Jal, Citing Threat to Devotional Practices
Raipur: Against the backdrop of changing dynamics in the lives of Hindus who hold faith and engage in religious rituals, the Central Government has made the controversial decision to impose an 18 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on holy Ganga Jal. This move is expected to raise the cost of this precious religious resource for devotees.
In response to this development, Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel took to Twitter, where he questioned the Central Government’s decision and called for its immediate reversal. He tweeted, “GST on Ganga Jal now!!! Should worshippers be discouraged from performing their rituals? It appears that the Central BJP Government’s intent aligns with just that. Just four days ago, the Modi government decided to levy an 18 per cent GST on holy Ganga Jal. This decision has exposed those who engage in superficial devotion, exploit the heritage of Sanatan culture for false glorification, and use the pretext of protecting sacred cows to spread fear. Modi Ji, while respecting public sentiments, should promptly reconsider and withdraw the GST on Ganga Jal.”
