Chhattisgarh Krishi Upaj Mandi (Amendment) Bill 2024 passed by voice votes amidst opposition from Congress

During the monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, the Chhattisgarh Krishi Upaj Mandi (Amendment) Bill 2024 was passed by a majority voice. The opposition Congress demanded a vote division, resulting in 47 votes in favour and 27 against.
Prior to the voting, former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel criticized the bill, comparing it to the introduction of Jio in the telecom market and expressing concerns over the impact on farmers. BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar supported the bill, stating it would allow state farmers to trade in the national agricultural market without harm.


Baghel suggested an amendment to prevent purchases below the support price, warning of potential exploitation by large traders. Congress MLA Vyas Kashyap voiced fears of needing to retract the bill like the central agricultural laws, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure for farmers.


BJP MLA Bhavna Bohra defended the amendment, highlighting its benefits for small farmers. Congress MLA Dwarkadhish Yadav echoed concerns over corporate exploitation, while BJP MLA Dharamlal Kaushik assured it would ensure fair prices and welfare for farmers.
