Breakthrough in Cyber Fraud Case: Doctor’s Rs 7.5 Lakh Recovered, Accused Arrested in Kerala

Raipur
In a swift operation, Mungeli police in Chhattisgarh made significant progress in an international cybercrime case, earning widespread recognition within the police department. The case involves a Rs 7.5 lakh fraud targeting a local doctor. The accused was tracked down and apprehended in Kerala, marking a breakthrough that eluded both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh police, who were also searching for the same culprit.

The case, which has garnered attention across the state, was a key topic of discussion during a recent meeting of police superintendents and range commissioners. While cybercrimes are frequent in Chhattisgarh, the rapid action and success in this case have revived hopes for justice among victims of similar crimes.

The Mungeli police conducted a targeted raid in Kerala’s Malappuram district, resulting in the arrest of Fawaz, the key suspect. Dr. Deepak Laj, a resident of Lormi, had transferred Rs 7.5 lakh to Fawaz’s account after prematurely breaking a fixed deposit. A further investigation revealed another suspect, Harikrishnan K., an advocate from Malappuram. Police recovered around Rs 5.79 lakh from him, raising suspicions that he may also be involved in the cybercrime syndicate. The police are currently probing his role in the scam.

Meanwhile, a police team has brought Fawaz back to Mungeli, where he will be presented in court today for judicial remand.

Investigations suggest this case has international links, with the mastermind believed to be operating from Dubai, managing a network spread across multiple countries. The complex nature of cybercrime often makes it difficult for police to achieve quick results, and many cases remain unsolved. However, under the direction of SSP Girijashankar Jaiswal, the police team showed remarkable efficiency in securing these arrests.

Dr. Deepak Laj, who had initially lost hope of retrieving his money, expressed his gratitude towards the police for their swift and effective action. Speaking to the media, he thanked the officers, stating that he had given up on the possibility of recovering the amount. With the Rs 6 lakh seized, the recovered funds are expected to be returned to him following legal proceedings.
